CHILDHOOD
I was born on 23 September 1954 in South Shields, Co Durham, England, a grey northern town at the mouth of the river Tyne, home of heavy industries such as coal-mining and shipbuilding. Baptised with the names 'Keith Ian', I am descended from a long line of Norfolk seafarers, nearly all called 'Richard' and going back to at least the mid-18th century and probably much earlier.

Notice the bra hanging on the rose bushes to the left of the picture and what appears to be a pair of underpants in the top right hand corner (the rest of the washing can be seen in the reflection in the window).
