HARTON DOWNHILL COUNTY INFANTS SCHOOL
My school career began in 1959 at Harton Downhill County Infants' School in my home town of South Shields. Teachers were Joan COOPER ('Miss Joan'), Mrs. SMITH and Mrs. PURVIS. My favourite hymn was Summer suns are glowing as it cheered me up to think of those few days in the year when the sky was not grey and overcast.
HORSLEY HILL COUNTY JUNIOR BOYS' SCHOOL
From 1962, I was a pupil at Horsley Hill County Junior Boys' School.

Teachers were Mrs. I. D. BEVERIDGE., Mrs. Joan SANDERSON, Brian K. HOWARD and, in the fourth year, Mr. KEIR, Mr. ROEBUCK and Mr. MELLING in succession.
During 1962-3, after morning assembly, we wrote our "news", a personal diary of recent events.

SOUTH SHIELDS GRAMMAR-TECHNICAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS
In September 1966, after passing the 11+ examination, I became a pupil at South Shields Grammar-Technical School for Boys.

I and other old boys have recorded memories of our schooldays and I still remember the tune and (some of the) words of the School Song. Our school's uniform has been used under the heading "Historical Boys' Clothing" as an example of what was worn by English grammar school boys in the last century.
I sang in the school choir throughout my school career and took part in the school concerts at the end of every term (e.g. the Christmas Concert of 1972 when we sang a South American carol Adorar al niņo and the summer concert of 1973).

UNIVERSITY
OF EDINBURGH
& MORAY HOUSE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
After leaving school in 1973, I spent 4 of the next 5 years studying at the University of Edinburgh where I graduated with a BMus (Hons) degree in 1978. The Dean of the Faculty of Music (and my teacher for harmony, counterpoint and fugue) was Kenneth Leighton, well known as a composer of anglican church music and likely to become better known for his music in other genres through the efforts of the Kenneth Leighton Trust, the ambition of which is to record all of his works.
I remained in this beautiful city for another year, at Moray House College of Education, and obtained my postgraduate certificate in secondary school music teaching.
Moray House in the Canongate was, incidentally, the place where the Treaty of Union was hastily signed in 1707 (in the summer-house which is still standing), the signatories having had to flee from Parliament House pursued by an angry mob whose wrath had been incensed, in part, by the knowledge that the voting in parliament had been rigged by bribes from the English government.
