PARENTS
My father, Stanley BULLEY (b. 1915), attended Holy Trinity Schools at Laygate in South Shields, living variously in Campbell Street and South Eldon Street and spent the first half of his working life on merchant ships, starting as a mess room boy and moving to the galley to become a cook.

His first ship was the S. S. GRIPFAST (Newbigin Steamship Company, Newcastle-upon-Tyne), the very same ship of which his great uncle, Alexander CORDINER, had been the master twenty years earlier in 1910, when the ship was first built.

My mother, Evelyn HARRISON (1920-1976), attended Barnes Road and Dean Road schools. The family lived in John Williamson Street and moved to Quarry Lane on the Sutton Trust housing estate in the mid-'30s. She worked for the nearby Kemp's grocery store in Fremantle Road, becoming manageress there.

Evelyn is on the left of the picture. (Expand)
Later, she joined the ATS during WWII and was stationed initially at Glencorse (near Penicuik, south of Edinburgh) and later in Hull, attached to anti-aircraft batteries.

After her marriage in 1943 and the end of WWII, the family lived in Horsley Vale. A member of Marsden Townswomen's Guild, she took part in some of their dramatic productions.

She died in 1976 of motor-neurone disease.
